“How long will Invisalign take?” It is the first question almost every patient asks at our Chatsworth and Zetland clinics. The honest answer depends on the complexity of your bite, your age, and how diligently you wear your aligners each day. This guide gives you a realistic, case-by-case breakdown so you know exactly what to expect before your first appointment.
At Orthoworx, our Invisalign service has been running since 2001, treating patients from age 11 to 71. Dr Eugene Chan has overseen thousands of aligner cases across Sydney, giving him a uniquely evidence-based perspective on realistic treatment timelines.

How Long Does Invisalign Take on Average?
For most patients, Invisalign treatment takes between 6 and 18 months. That is a wide range because every smile is different. At Orthoworx, we see everything from simple spacing cases that wrap up in six months to complex bite corrections that take closer to two years.
According to Invisalign’s official clinical guidance, treatment times vary based on product type, case complexity, and wear time, and must always be determined by your treating doctor. Dr Chan uses iTero digital scanning at both our Chatsworth and Zetland practices to generate a precise ClinCheck simulation before any treatment begins, so you see a projected timeline on Day 1.

Invisalign Timeline by Case Complexity
The table below summarises typical treatment windows for the most common orthodontic presentations we treat at Orthoworx. Your actual timeline will be confirmed at your initial consultation after Dr Chan reviews your iTero scans.
| Case Type | Examples | Typical Duration | Invisalign Product |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minor | Small gaps, mild crowding, minor spacing | 3 – 6 months | Invisalign Lite |
| Moderate | Moderate crowding, spacing up to 6 mm, mild overbite | 9 – 14 months | Invisalign Moderate / Comprehensive |
| Complex | Significant crowding, crossbite, overbite over 6 mm, open bite | 12 – 18 months | Invisalign Comprehensive |
| Severe | Severe bite issues, large skeletal discrepancies, multi-phase treatment | 18 – 24+ months | Comprehensive + refinements |
| Teen patients | Active tooth development, mixed dentition management | 12 – 18 months | Invisalign Teen |
All durations assume full compliance (22 hours per day). Refinement rounds may add 6–10 weeks.
What Factors Affect Your Invisalign Timeline?
No two Invisalign timelines are identical. Below are the six variables that most commonly affect how long your treatment takes.
1. Complexity of your bite
Simple spacing or minor crowding resolves quickly. Overbites, crossbites, and underbites demand more aligner stages and take longer — and in some cases, may be better managed with traditional braces at Orthoworx.
2. Your daily wear time
Aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours per day. Patients who consistently hit this target finish on schedule. Those who skip hours regularly can add weeks or even months to their treatment.
3. Your age
Younger patients typically move teeth faster because the supporting bone is less dense. Adults can absolutely achieve beautiful results, but may need slightly more time, especially for complex bite corrections.
4. Number of refinements needed
Refinements are additional sets of aligners ordered mid-treatment to fine-tune tooth positions. They are very common and normal. Each refinement round adds approximately 6 to 10 weeks.
5. Aligner change frequency
Most patients change aligners every seven days. In some cases Dr Chan may recommend a 10-day or 14-day schedule for more controlled, precise tooth movement, which lengthens the overall timeline.
6. Prior orthodontic history
If you had braces as a teenager and your teeth have shifted, a shorter Invisalign course (3 to 9 months) is often all that is needed to restore your smile. This is sometimes called a retreatment case.
Month-by-Month: What to Expect During Invisalign
Here is how a typical 12-month Invisalign treatment unfolds at Orthoworx for a moderate case. Shorter and longer courses follow the same phases, just compressed or extended.
Consultation and iTero Scan (Week 0)
Dr Chan examines your teeth, takes a full digital scan with the iTero scanner, and generates a ClinCheck plan. You see a 3D simulation of your final result before committing. X-rays confirm the health of your roots and bone.
Aligner Fitting and Attachments (Weeks 2–4)
Your custom aligners arrive from the Align Technology laboratory. At your fitting appointment, small tooth-coloured attachments (buttons) are bonded to certain teeth to help the aligners grip and apply precise forces. Most patients leave wearing their first tray.
Active Treatment: Months 1–6
You swap to a new aligner set every seven days. Early progress is often visible within the first 6 to 8 weeks. Check-up appointments at Chatsworth or Zetland happen every 6 to 8 weeks so Dr Chan can monitor movement and confirm teeth are tracking as planned.
Mid-Treatment Review: Month 6
A thorough progress check. New scans confirm how teeth are responding. If refinements are needed, a second set of aligners is ordered. If everything is tracking well, you continue through your remaining aligner sets.
Final Aligners and Debond: Month 10–12
You complete your last aligner set. Attachments are polished off at the debond appointment. Your smile is assessed against the original ClinCheck simulation to confirm all targets have been met.
Retainer Fitting: Month 12
Custom dental retainers are fitted to hold your new smile in place permanently. This is not optional — it is the step that ensures your investment lasts a lifetime.
The Compliance Rule: Why 22 Hours a Day Matters
The single biggest controllable factor in your Invisalign timeline is how long you wear your aligners each day. The clinical standard is a minimum of 22 hours. That leaves just two hours for eating and brushing.
Patients who regularly drop below 20 hours per day risk their teeth moving back between aligner sets, causing tracking errors. When tracking fails, refinement aligners are needed — adding time and cost. Consistent wear, on the other hand, means teeth move predictably from one tray to the next.
“In 20-plus years treating Invisalign patients, I can say with confidence: the patients who finish on schedule are the ones who treat their aligners like they are glued in. Two hours out per day — that is all you get. Use them wisely.”
Tips to Stay on Track
- Set a phone alarm for aligner changes every seven days.
- Keep your case with you — if the aligners are not in your mouth, they should be in their case, not a napkin.
- Brush and floss immediately after eating so putting aligners back in is automatic.
- Use a timer app to log daily wear hours during the first few weeks until the habit is established.
- If you lose or damage an aligner, contact our Chatsworth or Zetland clinic immediately — do not skip to the next set without guidance.
- Keep water handy — you can drink plain water with aligners in. Everything else means aligners out.
Invisalign vs Braces: Which Is Faster?
For mild to moderate cases, Invisalign is typically 3 to 6 months faster than traditional braces. This efficiency advantage has been validated in multiple clinical studies. For complex bite corrections, braces may be the more time-efficient option because they allow continuous force without relying on patient compliance.
We often recommend reading our Braces vs Invisalign comparison before making a decision. For patients who need both aesthetics and speed, Invisalign is usually the right call. For those with severe skeletal discrepancies, Dr Chan may recommend braces or a combined approach.
| Factor | Invisalign | Traditional Braces |
|---|---|---|
| Mild cases | 3 – 6 months ✓ | 6 – 12 months |
| Moderate cases | 9 – 14 months ✓ | 12 – 18 months |
| Complex bite correction | 18 – 24 months | 18 – 24 months ✓ |
| Compliance required | High (22 hrs/day) | Fixed — no choice |
| Visibility | Nearly invisible ✓ | Visible metal |
After Active Treatment: The Role of Retainers
When your final aligner is removed, active treatment is complete — but your orthodontic journey is not. Retainers are essential. Teeth have a natural memory and will drift back toward their original positions without retention. This process, known as relapse, is entirely preventable with the correct retainer protocol.
Orthoworx Retention Protocol
- Months 1–3: Full-time retainer wear (22 hours per day, same as aligners).
- Months 4–12: Nights only, every night.
- Year 2 onwards: Minimum 3 to 4 nights per week — ideally every night — indefinitely.
